We have enjoyed all kinds of emulators and game ROM‘s on the iPhone since the v1.0 of the firmware was out and the gaming charm of the iPod touch pretty much proves the potential of mobile handsets doubling as Gaming devices. So it comes as no surprise that Nokia is trying to show off the gaming powers of the Maemo 5 backed N900. While the Ovi store is yet to be blessed with 1000’s of amazing 3D games (via app store or otherwise 🙂 ), Nokia decided to promote the N900 with emulators that can play some cool retro games and the video was proudly uploaded by them that showed Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts and Super Mario World. The problem arises with the SNES emulator on the N900 was playing these nintendo titles while Nintendo doesn’t license its titles for any other platform other that the Wii. So Nokia was (in all probability) demoing an illegal build of the ROM that was running on the emulator.
Emulators on Android, iPhone or any other platform are legal, but the game makers IP is compromised by such roms. The video on youtube airing this demo has been taken down for now, but the smoke is already in the air. Edge online hints that Nintendo might be gearing up for some legal action, but you never know ‘bade bade companies ke beech – choti choti baatein hoti reh ti hai’ (shit happens!).
